• MD4/MD5 were RSA message digest (secure hash) algorithms. The NSA provided the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA) for government use.

• The NSA replaced SHA with SHA-1 in 1995 citing “recently discovered problems” with SHA (later referred to as SHA-0)
